by Hans Holbein

1530

Although the courtcupboard or tier of shelves is very simple and unadorned in style, it is mostly concealed by an expensive carpet, complimenting the rich brocade hangings, and the elaborate tiled floor. The shelves hold a wealth of scientific and astronomical instruments. (The elongated skull, designed to be seen sideways on to the picture, was not a standard feature of a Renaissance household.)
