 Carding, Spinning and Weaving
by Giovanni Boccaccio
from De claris mulieribus
15th Century
Two women are combing and carding wool on spikes, inpreparation for spinning. A third is spinning, using a spindle, with a distaff under her arm. The fourth is weaving, on a large but simple loom. Spinning was traditionally a female occupation, but weaving was shared. Broadcloth was generally woven by men, who had a longer reach.
